Mosque

Now we're going to visit Ulu Camii, the Great Mosque of Bursa.  We all remove our shoes, and the ladies cover their heads with some of those beautiful scarves they just bought at the bazaar.

"This way, Trafalgar!"

A three-tiered ablutions fountain stands beneath the central dome.  There's a fellow ablutioning right now.  Abluting?   Ablutating?  Washing his feet.

And there's that central dome.  Very nice.

This place was built in 1396-1399.

Mete explained a great deal to us about the Muslim faith.

He even demonstrated how to pray.

Every time I'd think I've seen about all I want to see in Turkey, Mete springs another surprise on me.  This visit was just fascinating.

And we hung on to his every word.

Mostly.

These are prayer beads.  There are 33 on a strand, so you go through them three times to get all 99 prayers.

The carpet was designed to serve as individual prayer rugs.

Beautiful designs were everywhere.

One last look at the fountain.
